"Safe to walk their dogs in certain areas. Not too many parks though, so no where to let your dog of their leash "

"This has been a nice neighborhood been is declining rapidly. There are too many new buildings going up and services suck! It dirty and crowded and way too expensive. "

"We have regular break ins and muggings. Too close to bart and too close to the high school. Neighbors keep to themselves. Not the ideal place people purport it to be. Further from bart is best "

"Deep Oakland roots make this neighborhood special. Gentrification has gone too far though. But for now the community spirit is still strong "

"This area is unique mostly due to the diversity of the people. Also, there's so much to do in this area. We have a lot of businesses that are true to our community. The people here are very kind, warm, and very, very giving. We have weekend events, which include cleaning up the area, BBQs, and things for the children in the neighborhood."

"The variety of restaurants and the atmosphere on Telegraph Avenue make Temescal unique. The weekly food truck set up is nice. It is also close to BART while still retaining significant amounts of culture and atmosphere."

"It is a relatively safe area for kids, but if you go west of 40th, it can be dangerous. There aren't many kids out in the neighborhood alone. There are not many families with kids—for example, on Halloween we do not get trick or treaters."

"For the most part, there is really no commute to be had, as most people will walk the one or two miles to get to our neighborhood."

"We've lived her for over a year and we love it! Walking distance to great restaurants, bars, and shopping; walking distance to the BART, a 5 minute drive to Berkeley Bowl and easy access to the highway. Wouldn't live anywhere else in the East Bay."

Our daughter started this year in 6th grade at Park Day, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Prior to Park Day, she was at Montclair Elementary school (OUSD) for K-5. We chose Park Day because we wanted an emotionally supportive, socially progressive environment. We are very happy. Becky, Rachel, Joyce, and the rest of the 6th grade faculty are so inspiring. They see the best in every single kid and they let them know that they believe in them -- they push them with patience and love. Both girls and boys at Park Day are confident to raise their hands in class because they establish a safe happy environment for classroom participation.Park Day is very good at integrating new students. The 6th graders start the year with an overnight trip to Westminster Woods and the teachers were very purposeful incorporating the new students and encouraging the entire class to bond with each other and the teachers. For our daughter it is important that she have a close relationship with her teachers, and we were impressed with how quickly this happened. Like other independent schools, Park Day has small class sizes. But what makes Park Day stand out is that the entire 6th grade cohort is small too, with only 36 total kids divided into two groups of 18. It all feels very cozy and manageable. Everyone gets to know each other and they become a tight group. The 6th graders also have their own physical space on campus (grandmas’ attic) where they take most of their classes, easing the transition to middle school. We love the Park Day campus. It is a beautiful oasis, not far from Broadway, but it feels far away with the gorgeous magnolia tree, chickens, outdoor picnic areas, and playgrounds. It is a campus that lets the middle schoolers still be kids and run around and explore and burn all their energy. We still see our daughter enjoying the monkey bars and the swings and we can’t imagine her in a place where she didn’t have this space to run around.Park Day is a place that understands all kinds of different kids. Middle school is not easy, so the nurturing environment is great for helping students stay focused and feeling supported emotionally, confident to continue developing their skills. We have also really enjoyed the emphasis on social justice which is a good match for our daughter and our family.
