"It's a great neighborhood for kids to see people shooting up on the street. Homeless situation is out of control. "

"There are lots of young kids in the neighborhood. Several cute parks within walking distance make this a great location for parents and caregivers. I wish there were more teens around too"

"Not the best area for families, park attracts a younger crowd not to mention homeless and drifters. Have spotted needles along my walk to work many times."

My kids love this school. We've had excellent teachers over the past 5 years, never had a bad one. I think our school attracts good teachers. It's a charter school but it's union -- maybe the combination works well because it's "experimental" but stable. TECA (we call it TECA) has a serious arts enrichment program with full-time teachers in visual art, music and dance. These teachers even have their own classrooms. This means that there is no need for the PTA to raise funds just to pay for art teachers, unlike many of the other schools we visited when we were first applying. Every student at TECA takes daily art classes in 10-week modules from TK through 6th grade and then focuses on the art of their choice in 7th and 8th grade. We also have STEAM and media arts classes. Because we both work full-time, we like the longer school hours. School starts at 8:15am and ends at 3pm except for Wednesday when school gets out at 1pm (like most schools). The schedule is the same for grades TK through 8th. We have a library, a nurse, a counselor, and full-time PE teacher (and, of course, the full-time art teachers). The campus itself is very welcoming and was completely renovated in 2012. Some potential families have been concerned about the diversity of the school. I can only say that my son was one of only a handful of white students when we started in 2012 and he has made a great group of friends (sleepovers, sports, etc.). The younger grades are even more diverse with higher percentages of all groups. That said, we love being in a school with so many Latino families, many who have been in the US for generations and many who have been here less than 10 or 20 years. Because it's a charter school, every student has someone in their family who made the effort to apply to the school outside of the regular SFUSD system, and you can feel that parent involvement from all parents, regardless of their background.
