"It’s a horrible area. Constant noise and screaming at night, car break ins, and a crazy number of homeless who yell at you for just minding your business. "

"This is the worst neighborhood in the city of San Francisco by far. But also the cheapest. Human waste and needles everywhere."

"The sheer amount of homeless people, drugs, and crime, even in the middle of the day. It's very close to downtown though!"

"This area is gritty but super convenient when it comes to food, shopping, and transportation to anywhere. It is walkable but not desirable at night. Plenty of bars and clubs within blocks from Union Square. The area is unique with history and comes with its own unique vibe. Dirty and grungy to the point of charm but not dangerous to explore."

"I’ve been living here for more than 10 years. Homelessness has become a much bigger problem. Drugs dealings are everywhere. Streets are dirty. I don’t think the city is doing enough to solve it. But I love the restaurants around here...taste and affordable."

"Not the easiest part of town to live in, but it’s convenient to all major shopping and restaurants in downtown SF. Like any other place, you have to be careful walking alone at night. There is a dense population of homeless people. They mainly keep to themselves, but every once in a while you’d be surprised. "

"Street drug and petty crime infestation. Armed robberies and break-ins are common. Security measures taken by local businesses and some residents might be increasing."

"I really wouldn't say unique. More like livable? This is no place for children period. Lifestyle here would be lovely and peaceful if that someone would boost the security in the T.L's , I'm just saying. "

"Very vibrant community with lots of eats and bars. Walking distance from union square and very densely populated. Extremely noisy and somewhat economically depressed but I’ve been here for 10 years and still enjoy it for the most part. "

"Can be a dangerous place for kids. There are many after-school programs, many small neighborhood parks, and the main branch of the library is in the Tenderloin."

This is our third year at Redding Elementary and we can't imagine being anywhere else... yet! As depicted in the photographs, the surrounding streets can be awfully gruesome and there's much the City can, and needs to, do to make the area safer and more pleasant for our little angels but it's a little piece of heaven once you're inside the newly renovated school. In my opinion, Redding has many different communities rather than one tight-knit one which is such a pity as, in appearance, it's clearly very diverse but, like the colors of the rainbow, they remain separate from one another. Much needs to be done to bring the many groups together in the hope that there can be more understanding, acceptance, tolerance, inclusiveness and to inevitably create a more harmonious environment for all.Yes, bullying does occur as with every school but instances do seem to be increasing mainly due to the fact that not much, if anything at all, is done to tackle it. The children are called into to the office for a little chat and swiftly sent back to class... Next! The principal is extremely dedicated and she and her team work incredibly hard to run the school as smoothly as possible, however, she is at times struggling to interact with the many different groups that make up the Redding community in a more impactful and relatable level. All that said, the teachers from TK all the way through to 5th Grade are just pure class and the saving grace. They are the glue that bonds Redding together and are the true champions here. I cannot thank them nor praise their enormous efforts enough. Thank you all so very much!

My daughter has attended TCS since pre-K and is now in fourth grade. I have served on the school site council and interview panels for both principal and assistant principal positions. Tenderloin Community School offers a positive environment for all students, educationally and socially. As a community school it not only provides classroom education, but also a food bank, a dental clinic, after school clubs and support to help families connect with social services. There are monthly principal's chats for parents/caregivers and regular parenting/health conversations. There are two family liaisons, one of whom is bilingual English/Spanish.I am aware of the “worrisome sign” of the school’s test scores, but they are not “caused” by the teachers, the students or the school environment. Below average standardized exam scores are not “contagious” but are the result of segregation and other complex social factors. Although the faculty and staff provide quality education to all of the students, the biggest challenges facing TCS are not academic issues. Rather, they are social and economic. More than half the students are English learners, many have experienced significant trauma, and almost all live in poverty. Like most public schools in California, TCS is underfunded. And this school does not have the luxury of affluence to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars to the PTA.The school does get significant financial support from the Bay Area Women's and Children's Center. BAWCC funds a second librarian, the technology program (including iPads, Chromebooks, and staff), structured activity time (offered instead of PE and recess as an effective means to reduce bullying), after school art, homework, cooking, tech, dance and newspaper/yearbook clubs, and the dental clinic. They also consistently advocate for the well-being of the community, both at school and beyond. Is Tenderloin Community School perfect? Of course not, because no school is. Yet it has been a great place for my daughter to learn and a wonderful community to be a part of.
